Year of the Bird

love magazines! Why you might ask. Well it’s because you can learn about a variety of different things without needing to dedicate an extensive amount of time to reading, AND they come with gorgeous pictures.

One of my favorite magazines, National Geographic, has chosen 2018 to be The Year Of The Bird. As soon as I saw the issue on the shelf I knew it was meant for me. Birds are my favorite animals. I fell in love with them in Panama when friends of my father introduced me to birding. If you know nothing about birds then you are missing out on a highly diverse and beautiful topic. If you want a little teaser, I recommend reading the January 2018 issue of National Geographic (and every other issue that comes out this year.)

Some fun facts:

  • There is such a thing as ” forensic ornithology.” Totally my dream job.
  • The Superb lyrebird can imitate chain saws. That would be terrifying to hear by yourself in a forest.
  • Flamingos are born with white plumage. It’s up to you to learn why they turn pink 🙂

Vocab word of the day. Plumage: noun: layer of feathers that cover a bird and the pattern, color, and arrangement of those feathers.
